NBA 2026–27 Eastern Conference Preview: The Contenders, Projected Starters and Team Expectations
The Race for the East
The 2026–27 Eastern Conference enters the season with the defending champion New York Knicks leading the NBA General Managers Survey. Philadelphia follows after an offseason featuring the arrivals of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, while Cleveland, Boston and Detroit complete the survey’s top five.
Toronto, Indiana and Miami round out the eight teams receiving enough votes to appear in the survey’s Eastern Conference rankings. But the landscape extends beyond those teams, with Orlando, Atlanta and Charlotte seeking to build on their previous seasons.
The following previews combine projected starting lineups, roster analysis and the NBA’s official GM Survey. For teams outside the survey’s ranked group, we include their final 2025–26 regular-season position and record.
The Eastern Conference’s Leading Contenders
New York Knicks — GM Survey No. 1: The defending champions retain a strong foundation built around Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and versatile perimeter defenders.
Philadelphia 76ers — GM Survey No. 2: LeBron James and Jaylen Brown join Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, creating one of the conference’s most significant roster transformations.
Cleveland Cavaliers — GM Survey No. 3: Donovan Mitchell and James Harden lead an experienced backcourt, supported by Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen inside.
Boston Celtics — GM Survey No. 4: Jayson Tatum remains central to a restructured roster featuring Paul George, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard.
Detroit Pistons — GM Survey No. 5: After leading the East with 60 regular-season wins in 2025–26, Detroit enters with an established young core and higher expectations.
Team-by-Team Preview
New York Knicks
Projected starters: Jalen Brunson, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, Karl-Anthony Towns.
New York returns as NBA champion with Brunson directing the offense and Towns providing scoring versatility. Bridges, Anunoby and Hart give the Knicks a combination of perimeter defense, rebounding and lineup flexibility. Their established rotation allows the team to maintain much of the structure that supported its championship campaign.
The challenge is sustaining that performance across another demanding season. Brunson’s ability to create shots in half-court situations remains essential, while Towns’ perimeter shooting creates space for teammates. New York’s defensive versatility and rebounding will be important as opponents continue adjusting to its offensive combinations.
2026–27 GM Survey: No. 1 in the Eastern Conference.
Philadelphia 76ers
Projected starters: Tyrese Maxey, V.J. Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, Joel Embiid.
Philadelphia’s roster has undergone a major transformation. James introduces another elite playmaker, Brown adds scoring and defensive versatility, and Maxey supplies pace alongside Embiid’s interior presence. The combination gives Philadelphia several options for initiating offense and attacking different defensive matchups.
The central question is how these players share offensive responsibilities. James and Maxey can both organize possessions, while Embiid remains a primary scoring option near the basket and from midrange. Managing minutes, maintaining defensive balance and developing reliable combinations will influence Philadelphia’s progress.
2026–27 GM Survey: No. 2 in the Eastern Conference.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Projected starters: James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Peyton Watson, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen.
Cleveland combines the offensive creation of Mitchell and Harden with Mobley and Allen’s interior defense. The established frontcourt provides rebounding and rim protection, while the backcourt offers multiple ways to generate scoring opportunities. Watson adds athleticism and perimeter defensive coverage.
Cleveland’s offensive versatility is particularly relevant against playoff defenses that limit transition opportunities. Harden’s passing can create opportunities for Mobley and Allen, while Mitchell remains capable of producing points independently. Perimeter defense and offensive efficiency against stronger opponents will be important measures of the team’s development.
2026–27 GM Survey: No. 3 in the Eastern Conference.
Boston Celtics
Projected starters: Payton Pritchard, Derrick White, Paul George, Jayson Tatum, Neemias Queta.
Boston begins a new chapter after Jaylen Brown’s departure. Tatum remains the offensive centerpiece, while George brings additional shot creation and White continues to contribute on both ends of the court. Pritchard provides ballhandling and perimeter shooting, helping maintain Boston’s spacing.
The restructured lineup will need to establish a new distribution of offensive responsibilities. George’s ability to operate alongside Tatum gives Boston different options in half-court possessions, while White’s defensive versatility remains valuable. Frontcourt depth and rebounding will also influence the team’s consistency.
2026–27 GM Survey: No. 4 in the Eastern Conference.
Detroit Pistons
Projected starters: Cade Cunningham, Duncan Robinson, Ausar Thompson, John Collins, Jalen Duren.
Detroit finished the previous regular season with the East’s best record, supported by Cunningham’s playmaking and Duren’s interior production. Thompson provides defensive versatility, while Robinson’s shooting helps create space for the team’s primary offensive options. Collins adds another experienced presence in the frontcourt.
The next challenge is translating regular-season consistency into sustained postseason success. Cunningham’s decision-making against physical defenses will remain central, while the development of Thompson and Duren can provide additional offensive balance. Detroit also benefits from a core that has accumulated experience playing together.
2026–27 GM Survey: No. 5 in the Eastern Conference.
Toronto Raptors
Projected starters: Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, Kawhi Leonard, Scottie Barnes, Jakob Poeltl.
Leonard’s arrival adds experienced scoring and perimeter defense to a team built around Barnes’ versatility. Quickley and Barrett provide additional creation, while Poeltl remains important to the interior rotation. Toronto can use Barnes and Leonard in different offensive combinations depending on matchups.
The team’s development will depend partly on how efficiently its main scorers operate together. Leonard’s half-court production could provide another option when opponents limit transition opportunities, while Barnes contributes passing, rebounding and defensive flexibility. Leonard’s availability will also influence rotation stability.
2026–27 GM Survey: No. 6 in the Eastern Conference.
Indiana Pacers
Projected starters: Tyrese Haliburton, Andrew Nembhard, Aaron Nesmith, Pascal Siakam, Ivica Zubac.
Haliburton’s return gives Indiana its primary offensive organizer. Siakam provides scoring versatility, while Zubac strengthens the frontcourt with rebounding and interior defense. Nembhard and Nesmith contribute perimeter defense and complementary offensive production.
Indiana’s transition offense has historically benefited from Haliburton’s passing and ability to make quick decisions. His return creates opportunities to restore that rhythm, while Zubac introduces a different interior presence. The combination of pace, half-court execution and defensive improvement will shape the Pacers’ progress.
2026–27 GM Survey: Tied for No. 7 in the Eastern Conference.
Miami Heat
Projected starters: Davion Mitchell, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo.
Antetokounmpo’s arrival reshapes Miami’s frontcourt alongside Adebayo. Their combined defensive mobility and interior presence create new possibilities, while Thompson’s shooting becomes important to offensive spacing. Wiggins contributes athleticism and perimeter defense, giving Miami several lineup options.
The main tactical question is how Miami maximizes the partnership between Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. Both can initiate offense and attack inside, but effective perimeter shooting will be necessary to maintain space around them. Defensively, their versatility provides opportunities for different coverages and switching combinations.
2026–27 GM Survey: Tied for No. 7 in the Eastern Conference.
Atlanta Hawks
Projected starters: CJ McCollum, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, Jalen Johnson, Onyeka Okongwu.
Atlanta relies on Johnson’s all-around production, Daniels’ perimeter defense and McCollum’s experience as an offensive creator. Alexander-Walker provides another defensive option in the backcourt, while Okongwu contributes rebounding and interior activity. The Hawks finished sixth in the East last season.
Johnson’s continued development is an important storyline because his versatility allows Atlanta to create offense from multiple positions. The team must balance its defensive strengths with reliable perimeter scoring, particularly in half-court situations. Consistency against stronger opponents will influence its ability to build on last season’s performance.

Orlando Magic
Projected starters: Jalen Suggs, Desmond Bane, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, Wendell Carter Jr.
Orlando continues building around Banchero and Wagner, supported by Bane’s outside shooting and Suggs’ defensive contributions. Carter provides rebounding and frontcourt stability. The team’s combination of size and athleticism remains a central feature of its identity.
Improving offensive efficiency is an important objective for Orlando. Bane’s shooting can create additional space for Banchero and Wagner to attack, while Suggs helps maintain defensive pressure on opposing guards. The development of a more consistent half-court offense could help the Magic improve on their previous regular-season finish.

Charlotte enters a new phase following LaMelo Ball’s departure. Miller and Knueppel provide young scoring talent, while White introduces additional backcourt creation. Reid offers frontcourt shooting and versatility, and Diabaté contributes rebounding and interior activity.
The development of Miller and Knueppel will be especially important to Charlotte’s offensive identity. Their ability to score from the perimeter can help create opportunities for teammates, while White provides another option to organize possessions. Establishing defensive consistency will be an important part of the team’s next stage.

Milwaukee Bucks
Projected starters: Ryan Rollins, Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kyle Kuzma, Myles Turner.
Milwaukee begins life after Antetokounmpo, with Herro assuming an important scoring role. Turner contributes rim protection and perimeter shooting, while Kuzma and Jaquez provide additional offensive options. The team enters a period of adjustment following the departure of its longtime franchise centerpiece.
Without Antetokounmpo’s interior scoring and transition production, Milwaukee must develop a different offensive structure. Herro’s shot creation becomes more significant, while Turner can help stretch opposing defenses. The development of younger players and the establishment of clear responsibilities will be important throughout the season.

Giddey’s passing and rebounding can help Chicago generate offense through different positions, while Powell provides an established perimeter scoring option. Claxton strengthens interior defense, and the progress of Buzelis and Wilson will help determine how quickly the team’s younger core develops.

The Nets will need to balance opportunities for younger players with the offensive responsibilities of their veterans. Porter provides perimeter shooting, while Randle can create offense from the frontcourt. Young’s playmaking can create opportunities for Washington’s younger players, while Davis and Sarr provide size and defensive potential.
